From an old map of Annan published in 1848/58 this was an inn called New Inn. Valuation rolls show Mrs Clapperton as owner but William and Mary Coupland as tenants. By 1893 Mary Coupland is a widow. 1905 sees William Ogilvie with his drapers shop in number 93 but he was living in the house at 91. When it changed hands in 1931 it became known by locals as an upmarket ladies dress shop - J&R Foster who were based in Newcastleton.
We then had a modern electrical shop and locally based Estate Agents.
The Estate Agent closed their doors at the end of 2023 and early 2024 the Courtyard business being run from the New Inn courtyard behind this building took over the shop location. They do shoe repair, leatherwork and haberdashery supplies.
1905 W Ogilvie, Draper
Memories; We were sent an article (thanks L Hermann) with a photo of Mr Ogilvie outside his shop - sent into the magazine originally by Mrs P.A.Holt, a relative of Mr Ogilvie. Living in Seaforth Avenue she was prompted to send the photo when improvement work was being carried out on the building. In the article she was quoted as saying "The gentleman in the photograph is Walter Ogilvie, a relative of mine ...Walter grew up in the Ewes Valley, nr Langholm but did not want to follow his father into farming, instead he preferred drapery as a career... some time prior to his marriage in Mar 1880 (to Jane Irving, milliner, daughter of George Irving roper in Butts St.) he bought the house & shop at 91-93 High Street... they set up business together running a very successful draper & milliners shop until his retirement in about 1930." They had 3 daughters and 1 son all of whom were born at Number 91 in the 1890's. Walter died on May 25 1945 at 2 Cumberland Terrace, Annan, aged 82 years.
