Although we have put these adverts in for Number 105 there is much confusion about whether they were actually in 103 or 105! Valuation Rolls have the same names as proprietors and/or tenants and George Hodgson and JM Moore butcher have also been suggested for 103 and 105! We are not arguing with people's memories when they say they worked at Number .. but have found it very difficult to work out the correct sequence of tenants.

1918 G Hodgson Glass/china

1920 G Robson Butcher

1925 JM Moore, butcher

1935 RoM

Memories: Mr Moore Snr sent fat pigs to Liverpool & Newcastle and often kept a drove of pigs in the shed up the close behind his shop - this close was the only one off the High Street not to have a name. A rodeo then took place as they were driven to the station and if one happened to lie down and refuse to move it was lifted into the back seat of Jack Moore's car!

1954 Mrs Bell, china

1962 J Moore, Butcher

1966 Ralph Johnstone, fruit & flowers

Memories: Ralph had been in the green-grocery trade since the age of 14, helping his dad run a nursery at Silverwalk & the main greenhouses at Newington Rd. When they bought another nursery at Northgate growing soft fruit, they sold it from the house & a stall in Market Square. He graduated to a van and finally bought the shop which he ran successfully with his wife
