In the mid 19th century Number 31 was occupied by the Bush Inn. This is the only photograph we have showing any of the building ... the inn is to the left of Johnstone the butcher.

As well as shops here, they had shops in Church St., Millpark, Eastriggs, and Eaglesfield. They also had 2 travelling shops, coal and milk deliveries and a bakery in Moat Road! I remember Mr. Wilson, Mr Darroch, Mr Drummond and Mr Walter Cowan being managers of the Co-op at different times.
By 1930's the Co-op was in numbers 27-31. If you wish to see the details for Numbers 27 and 29 please go to the archives section to the right of the page.
Memories: There was a circular or horse-shoe counter which you approached, and then told the assistant what you wanted: he would make up your order on the counter, tell you the cost, then put the bill & your money into a little brass container overhead. He pulled a handle and the container whizzed along a system of wires to a central kiosk where a cashier checked your bill and put it receipted, with your change, in the container and sent it back to the assistant. During this time the assistant would have wrapped your purchases in a parcel with brown paper and string. He handed over your change and parcel and away you went.
