This unit joined Numbers 32, 34 and 36. Before 1900 Number 32 might even have joined with Number 28 as Refreshment Room/Restaurant !! Newspaper and RoM magazine adverts do not agree with shop numbers and with early Council Valuation Rolls being handwritten and subject to crossing out, it has been difficult working out who was in which shop and when. These are our interpretation of the occupiers but if you have evidence of a better explanation please let us know.

Rumour has it that The Marchioness of Queensberry ran a coffee house somewhere in this block. As a result of the problems of excess drinking, a temperance movement was set up and supported by the wealthy. Valuation Rolls for this block do indeed show the Marchioness as the Tenant of part of this block in 1881 but with James Boyd as the Occupier. This continued until 1890 when her support was no longer required and the coffee shops were able to support themselves !!
