We believe Caledonian House was originally 117-119. There is mention of it being a drinking establishment/Hotel at one time but when councils cut down on licenses there were many attempts to regain a license here but they were refused.
The building (Number 117-119) is a Category B Listed Building. Category B means it is of regional importance.
The listing says ' Earlier/mid 19th century... late 19th century shop front fills entire ground floor... 2 storeys, 3 bays...shop front has timbered pilasters, paired at the ends and ... shop windows with paired arched lights... with leaded panels over. First floor sashes with 12-pane glazing..'

The proprietor of the shop was still via the solicitor for Thomas Nelson, but WG Dixon was now the tenant. In 1931 Peter Innes grocer is named as the tenant but was this still trading under the name WG Dixon? The owner is still Reps of T Nelson !!

1981 J R Nixon, Betting Office
Memories: My dad, John Nixon, had the bookies there. It was the army and navy stores prior to him opening it as a bookies in the 70’s. William Hill took over in August ‘95 for approx 1 to 2 years I think. Then it was rented to Sew n Sew.
