For a long time, in people's minds, this shop was DE shoes and back in 1890s there was a bootmaker George Graham in the shop with rooms above, followed by Robert Grieve Underwood but by 1904 William Smith took over as tenant but this was the name of the owner of the Dundee & Equitable Boot Company. This chain of stores was started in Dundee in 1867 and as the company grew they bought up premises around Scotland. By 1907 William Smith was the owner of the property. Old adverts show that a visiting dentist used rooms above the bootmakers belonging to Peter Crone. Now at this time Peter Crone was described as a Coach hirer in trade directories and had stables in Battery Street, 132 High Street and Bridgend but occupied the house in Poplar Court, seen in the photo above.

1982 RoM carried this picture showing
Peter Henderson and his wife Mary outside the shop
sometime around the early 1940s

Other shop managers were Colin Gordon, John Wallace, Guy Kyles (who opened his own shoe shop at number 103) and Agnes Burns.

Since 2000 the shop has hosted a sports shop, Annan TV, Jungle Vapes and now Macc Designs.

Old Adverts

Dundee & Equitable's adverts below in 1908 and 1911 from newspaper archives that we've seen, were different almost every week with engravings of the current, fashionable shoes. It got us to wonder how the newspaper coped with producing new engravings so often. Talking to someone 'in the business', they said that a national company might have had the blocks made and distributed to shops and they would give these to the printers with their details being added to the bottom of the advert.
