At the turn of the century a boot merchant was listed at 106 in censuses and soon this was taken over by the Dundee & Equitable Boot company before they moved to a more permanent location at Number 41. This then became the Fruit Depot of Annan as various Fruiterers and Confectioners were located here. Confusion reigns over shop names with old adverts, photos and Valuation rolls giving conflicting information. Duncan Dunsmore features in many adverts but J Maxwell is shown as the tenant. We had just decided that he perhaps traded using the established name of Dunsmore until we found an old photo with Maxwell's name above the door !!
In the 1940s and 1950s there was first a ladies hairdressers here then a gent's barber before being turned into a trendy Coffee bar in the swinging 60s.
By 1970 two shops were merged together under the name of Coopers which later became Fine Fare. They also had a shop at Number 82.
Various video shops came and went - and for a short time it was trading as Nickel & Dime. Plans are afoot for it to become a dentist.

1989 RoM featured this picture of an old parade thought to be 1938. Next to Bond and Thompson we can just make out J Maxwell on the shop front. |
