Businesses at this end of the High Street very often stayed for a short period of time testing their retail skills before moving to more central premises as they became successful or they realised that retailing was not for them and tried something else !!

This was a life insurance and pension company founded in 1858 in England. It was originally known as the Refuge Friend in Deed Life Assurance and Sick Fund Friendly Society! It merged with United Friendly in 1996 to form the United Assurance Group, who was eventually taken over by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society in 2000.
