The building  (Numbers 74-78 and the Corner House Hotel), is a Category B Listed Building. Category B means it is of regional importance.
The listing says 'it is a 3 storey renaissance-detailed corner block with shops and hotel. Elaborately detailed S elevation to High Street with sculptured ornament at top floor and a recessed circular turret. The polished ashlar (dressed stone) elevation has 2 bays with tripartites, balconies to upper floor on columns supported on stone corbels and elaborate pedimented heads raised above eaves level. Further narrow left bay with oculus (circular window) at second floor. Turret at the angle with Lady Street has columned mullions and slated dome'.
This photo from the 1930's shows those features.

1931 Liptons

Sir Thomas J. Lipton opened his first shop in Glasgow in 1871. His shops multiplied and his decision to grow, manufacture and sell tea helped make him famous around the world. By 1889 he had 150 shops known as 'markets' but by 1919 this had increased to 500. A report in 1908 mentioned "magnificent oak fittings...artistic tiling...beautiful marblework...

In 1927 it was decided to close unprofitable branches and to update the look of the shops. Then in 1929 Lipton Ltd became one of a group of provision merchants which formed a central buying organisation called Allied Suppliers Ltd. Lipton's name survived, embracing self-service in the 1950's but never developing superstores.

In 1982 Allied Suppliers (including 600 Lipton shops) was sold to Argyll Foods and the shops were rebranded as Presto. The last 84 shops in the UK closed in September 1986. The last record we have for Lipton's in Annan was 1965.

Memories: Roger Ewing was the manager and they always had a delivery of Bisland's loaves from the train every morning and Lipton's was the best place to go to if you wanted a penny bag of broken biscuits. (D. Gillies)

James, William, Alexander & John Bisland ran a small family bakery in Glasgow acquiring other bakeries around the area as they became more successful. They had 12 vans as well as horses and carts to distribute the bread all over Scotland. They became part of the Spillers group who eventually dissolved the company and sold its smaller bakeries to Mothers Pride.
